When settlers moved onto the Kansas prairie in the 1800s, they ran into a problem that’s hard to imagine today: there were almost no trees. The tallgrass prairie stretched for miles without enough timber to build fences, homes, or even firewood. What the land did have, just below the surface, was limestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resourceful homesteaders learned to quarry that stone by hand, splitting it into long, narrow posts using feathers and wedges along natural seams in the rock. A single post could weigh several hundred pounds, and a family might cut hundreds of them to fence a quarter section. Those posts went into the ground and, in many cases, never came out. More than a century later, a huge number of them are still doing their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
